ASCCP Mission Statement ASHA Mission Statement ASCCP Continuing
Medical Education (CME) Mission Statement Established in 1964, the American Society for Colposcopy
and Cervical Pathology (ASCCP) is the organization of health care
professionals committed to improving health through the study, prevention,
diagnosis, and management of lower genital tract disorders. Scope of the ASCCP CME Program The scope of the Society's continuing medical education
efforts will be limited to the female lower genital tract, to include
disorders of the cervix, vagina and vulva. Other disorders, including
those of the male, may be addressed briefly as they relate to our
primary scope. Intended Participants The intended participants are licensed physicians
(eg, gynecologists, family physicians, pathologists, etc.) and other
licensed healthcare personnel (eg, nurse practitioners, physician
assistants, etc.) interested in colposcopy and the diseases of the
lower genital tract. CME Goals The Society seeks to educate health care professionals
and others in colposcopy and related strategies focused on the lower
genital tract. We intend to provide physicians and other licensed
care givers with the knowledge and skills necessary to:
- perform basic and advanced colposcopic examinations (including
an understanding of normal and abnormal cervical anatomy, cytology,
histology, and colposcopic findings)
- recognize and evaluate premalignant and malignant cervical disease
- recognize the role of co-factors in the development of neoplastic
disorders of the cervix, vagina and vulva
- recognize, evaluate, and treat related vulvar and vaginal diseases
- become familiar with new diagnostic modalities for lower genital
tract diseases
- provide women and their partners with appropriate patient education
materials
CME Objectives The Society intends to meet its CME goals through
the following educational objectives:
- to conduct medical education postgraduate courses teaching colposcopy
and other techniques and concepts, and disseminating new ideas
- to conduct a biennial scientific meeting to disseminate new
ideas, conduct debates and panel discussions on screening, triage
and management issues
- to provide self-study educational resource materials, including
CD-ROMs, videotapes, slide teaching kits, the quarterly Home Study
Course, and other products
- to publish the Journal of Lower Genital Tract Disease, an international
peer-reviewed journal
- to support residency training in colposcopy and other skills
related to lower genital tract disorders through curriculum development,
the resident recognition program, and other means
- to facilitate colposcopy mentorship training
- to produce patient education pamphlets on lower genital tract
disease issues such as vulvar pain syndromes, the colposcopy procedure,
etc.
- to provide a medium to assess our educational outcomes
CME Planning Process Initial development of any CME program, whether a
postgraduate course or enduring material, begins with the Education
and/or Program. The appropriate committee chairpersons work to ensure
the educational planning and evaluation of a particular program
(eg, needs assessment, identification of the audience, development
of learning objectives and evaluation tools) are handled according
to the Society's internal CME protocols, as well as adhere to the
ACCME's Essential Areas and Elements. All final decisions regarding
a program, such as its curriculum content, format of delivery, selected
faculty or authors, etc., are determined by the Board of Directors.
Administration of the program is conducted by the Society's Course
Administrator and/or Executive Director in conjunction with the
appropriate Committee chairpersons or Program Directors. Production
and administration of a program or enduring material is reviewed
biannually by the Board of Directors. Overall review of the Society's
mission statement, CME mission statement, and activities is undertaken
every two years by the Board of Directors. Specific ASCCP policies regarding faculty selection,
corporate sponsorship of programs, etc., may be found in the Society's
education and program files at the national office. Return to top ASHA Mission
